A new Venom movie still isn't sure what to do with Spider-Man's creepy foe

A stand-alone movie starring extreme Spider-Man opponent Venom looks, from a distance, like a beacon of ’90s nostalgia, addressing that era’s tendencies to go big and fan-baiting in its comics yet weirdly small and chintzy in its comics-based movies. (At least those that don’t feature Batman.) But as it turns out, Venom, the solo vehicle for the symbiote-based, head-chomping antihero, has more of a mid-2000s vibe. It’s reminiscent of the post-Spider-Man, pre-MCU superhero pictures, the ones made with some degree of star power and/or production value but lacking a sense of purpose beyond showing off a live-action exclamation of a famous comics character. It’s Daredevil! It’s Ghost Rider! It’s the Fantastic Four! What else do you rubes want? The Venom audience approval rating has unexpectedly soared

Things are looking much brighter for one of Marvel Comics' grimmest characters.  While critics have torn Venom limb from goop-covered limb, the moviegoing masses appear to be really digging the film, having unexpectedly sent the movie's audience approval rating soaring.  When Venom slithered its slimy body onto the silver screen at the start of October, critics weren't exactly loving what the symbiote and its disgraced investigative journalist host (Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock) had to offer. The select group of industry insiders who attended the film's world premiere in Los Angeles on October 1, a few days ahead of its October 5 release, seemed split on how to feel about the not-quite-a-superhero superhero flick. Eddie's relationship with Venom was a highlight for some, as were the unintentionally hilarious parts of the script, but the inconsistent tone and failure to follow through on its more interesting elements were major points of contention.
